As Vice President, you will lead the Corporate Development function at Zendesk -- spanning M&A strategy and execution, integration, and strategic investments. You will architect an M&A and investments strategy that aligns with corporate objectives, cultivate relationships with a broad ecosystem of investors, advisors, and founders + executives, negotiating and executing transactions, and leading the design, oversight, and ongoing executive management of acquisition integration. In addition, you will oversee and help shape Zendesk’s Strategic Investments function as it launches and scales.
The role is broadly cross-functional and will manage relationships and projects that span Product Development, Corporate Strategy, Marketing, Finance, IT, Technology Alliances, People & Places, Legal, Sales, and more. This role will lead Zendesk’s Corporate Development team, which includes a Director of Strategic Investments, a Director of Acquisition Integration, and a Senior Manager of Corporate Development.
Determine and pursue Zendesk’s M&A priorities based on corporate strategy, product vision / objectives and roadmap
Identify, scope, lead, and socialize explorations of market sectors that align to Zendesk strategic objectives
Advise on and assist in development of Zendesk’s corporate strategy in conjunction with senior management and other company stakeholders, especially with regards to identifying how strategy can be accelerated through acquisitions. Serve as a intellectual sparring partner + strategist to leaders across the company
Augment Corporate Development’s internal brand of excellence and rigor through continuing thought leadership / strategic POVs and rhythm of stakeholder engagement. Personally build trusted advisor relationships with all VP+ executives at Zendesk
Develop and maintain a broad network of industry contacts, venture capital investors and financial advisors to assist in understanding market and industry trends and building transaction opportunities
Shape the processes/practices and tools of the Corporate Development team
Collaborate with Senior Director of Investments on development and socialization of investment theses, investing processes (e.g. investment committee and approvals), and portfolio management
Manage and lead the the M&A transaction process including financial analysis, valuation and transaction structuring, diligence, and executive and board presentations
Lead negotiations on behalf of Zendesk, directly with target management. Manage, mentor, and coach Senior Director and/or Senior Manager when they are serving as deal leads.
Drive and manage cross functional teams across the organization necessary to diligence and complete deal execution and integration planning
Define and coordinate the development of integration plans and assist with post-closing integration execution
Strive for excellence as a respected people manager of a small but impactful team. Elevate them throughout the organization..
Act as peer, adviser, mentor, and thought leader to colleagues across the company
You have a BA or BS undergraduate degree. An MBA or JD is strongly preferred
You have 15+ years relevant work experience, including at least 10 years directly working in Corporate Development leading and managing transactions for technology companies. Ideally you also have previous work experience in Product Management or significant experience collaborating with Product Management leaders and teams
You have domain experience and understanding of broader SaaS trends and market opportunities
You have substantial experience and skills in strategic and financial analysis, project management, and communication. You are able to interact in a manner that gain trusts, and negotiate mutually beneficial business objectives with potential targets and within the organization
You enjoy and have been told that you are good at writing, across both memos and slides
You thrive on working on multiple projects at once, and seek out cross-functional engagement
You have an active strong network of founders, investors, ecosystem partners, and thought leaders to tap into for views on industry trends and market intelligence, and are excited to augment this network
